As any student of history could have foreseen the Arab Spring has become an Islamist winter. Well before the first rockets were launched at Jerusalem and Tel Aviv sending civilians running for cover Mohammed Morsi the newly elected President of Egypt and member of the Muslim Brotherhood, was seen mouthing amen to a prayer calling for the genocide of The Jewish people. Iran, emboldened by the Obama encouraged regime change has stepped up its provocations, including recently firing on a US drone in international waters. In this article I will argue that there is no moral equivalency between Israel and her Jihadist enemies and furthermore they are part of a broader battle which radical Islamists are waging against The West.
The reader may be asking how is this relevant to the onslaught of rockets targeting Israeli civilians which took place for a long time and with more frequency this past week? To answer that one must be aware that The Iranian government and The Muslim Brotherhood of Egypt share a goal of a Middle East without Israel and a return of The Islamic Caliphate. Islamic Jihad and Hamas are both Iranian backed terror groups dedicated to the destruction of Israel. Iran this past week bragged about supplying the missiles which were reaching Tel Aviv. Hamas has perpetrated many deadly homicide bombings in pizza stores, hotels and malls over the years and shares a Jihadist Muslim Brotherhood ideology. The fact that Iranian ideology and influence is growing is very bad news for the entire Western World and for the prospects of peace in the region.
Once one is aware of what Hamas represents it shows the fallacy of the moral equivalency argument espoused by many in the left wing mainstream media. As Dennis Prager points out in his recent article, How The New York Times Covers Evil, the mainstream media seeks to portray a moral equivalency between Hamas rocket fire and Israeli army air strikes to protect Israel—in doing so they promote evil. This past week the Jihadhists bombed a bus in Tel Aviv among a series of civilian targets which they targeted. There is no equivalency between terrorists sponsored by the Iranian terrorist regime targeting civilians for injury and murder and a democratic government defending itself by targeting terrorists and destroying rocket launching pads. Any time civilians are killed it is tragic but it is more tragic that Hamas and other Islamist terror groups deliberately fire from schools and civilian populations and use civilians as human shields. This disparity and lack of moral equivalency I believe is why in a recent CNN poll the majority of Americans sympathize with Israel in this conflict, despite the fact that at times CNN tends toward an Anti-Israel bias.
To stand with Israel in recognizing the threat they face from Islamist terror is to realize that they are defending Western civilization from Jihadism. Indeed, with images of Islamist terrorists dragging an American ambassador in Libya through the streets fresh in our minds and the horrifying images of the Twin Towers in our not so distant collective memory, we in America know all too well the evil of radical Islamic ideology and its threat to our way of life. Morsi’s Muslim Brotherhood is the group which Al Qaeda terrorist leader Ayman Al Zawaheri came from and it is a group which has pledged to destroy Western civilization from within. While the left always promotes a moral equivalency there is none here. Radical Islam is at war with the non Muslim world and its values whether they are fighting India, Thailand or rioting over cartoons in France the civilized world faces a common threat. Like Bin Ladin The Hamas terrorists in Gaza have told Israel that they Hamas love death more then Israel loves life. So when Israel strikes against terror they are fighting another front in the war on terror and though no one wishes war, terror is unacceptable and no government would or should tolerate it. These are some important points to remember when reading the headlines from the Middle East and this is what Israel is up against and why America’s support for Israel in this critical time is so important.
